where'd all the rattle snakes go ????????? continued.....

"Carl........ August 21 at 3:35am ..........they is TO MANY of them here, iv killed over 20 this year. Its nothing to see one dead on the road. I cant stand them. This one chased me.. it was one of the meanest Snakes iv ever seen.
Floyd Merriman........ it was the same way here when i was a kid. now, like i said, i've only seen 1 in 10 years. where i've had my trot line set was rattle snake central when i was in high school. i've been out there pratically every day for the last 2 months, and walked all over........not one.
when i was 6-7-8-or 10 i used to keep horny toads (texas horned lizard's) staked out like my dad had his roosters. i saw one horny toad about 15 years ago, they used to be everwhere. 'big green grasshoppers' with no wings, what we called jumbo's, i haven't seen one since i moved back here in 92'.......kangaroo rats, i don't know if you've ever seen one, but they were a little rat that looked and was about the same size as a gerble, only hopped on their back legs and had a long tail with a white ball of fluff on the end, used to be everywhere. since 92' i've seen one, and my buddy driving the car ran over him.....i'm sure there's lot's more, but these are just a few of the things i've seen disappear around here since i was your age......'i'm just say'n'.......you know the ol say'n, 'here today, gone tommorrow'...."

where'd all the rattle snakes go ?????????

chicken killers: carl, when i was a kid 35 years ago, rattler's were everywhere around here. now i haven't seen but 1 in the last 10 years, and i look. with the snake hunts and people kill'n them because their snakes, it doesn't take long to really endanger... their population..they don't breed til their several years old and they only have a handful of babies 5-10. the rats that they eat do way more harm than they do.ya'll are smarter than a snake, get you a stick to pick'm up with and just move'm on down the hill..........i've never seen one eat'n a chicken.......

· Carl ............. But the thing is i have a lil brother here, he is only 6, few years back. kid 1 miles form here was almost killed by a rattle Snake. there is alot of them here, its nothing to see them here. In my book the Best snake is a Dead snake.

· Carl But 2 weeks ago a good friend kill a Big Rattle Snake in his Brood yard In a the pen with a cock and Hen, and 2 months b4 that killed one eating a young stag.......

· Floyd Merriman.............. i'm sure they will eat one if presented the oppertunity and alot of people feel the same way as you on the dead snakes........i've killed a few in the ol day's myself. my pardner, 'lil joe' is scared to death of a snake....when i catch a big bull, or rat snake around the chicken yard and put'm in a sack to haul down the road,to turn loose, he just can't understand it, as he feel's just like you.......they are something to see though and i want my grandkids to experience them 1st hand and not from one of my stories !!!!!"

tips for chicken men ........."cheap insurance"

Facebook (2) Carl Photos - chicken killers: "Floyd Merriman..................... every chicken man that doesn't have a brinkman-qbeam-spot/flood-3 million maxpower-rechargeable-spotlight from walmart, is livin in the dark ages. for $39.95 you can get one with an extra battery, as the battries only last 10-15 min., or you can plug it in your cig. lighter for cont. use. i don't know how i ever lived without mine. i'm on my 3rd one in 15 years and have probably bought 4-5 for my tight buddies......they'll "light up the world".............

some thoughts on buying that big money trio...........

Facebook: "Floyd Merriman....................... you'll never get a rooster that's any better than the guy who sold him to you.....it's ok to buy from a full time breeder, i think. just do your homework, don't call with 100 questions, you should have already done the reserch, if you have a few basic questions, that's fine. ask if what he's sending you is 'special'. for the 1000.00 most big breeders are charging, you should be getting a show-piece.....at least the best 1 of 100 from the breed you've chosen."

questions for floyd

sir,
i would like to know your oppinon on breeding brother to sister in gamefowl?

REPLY
breeding bro.-to sister is fine as long as the stock you start with are solid !! inbreeding magnifies everything-----both good, and bad........so as long as you had more good traits than bad to start with you should be ok. you can cull what you don't like and use what you do like to cross your other fowl on to get your show fowl. i know personally one of the top names in the bussiness and he breeds father over daughter-granddaughter- great grand dau...etc...etc..., and he says they get nothing but better.......and you certainly can't argue with his record, as i would put him in the top 5 of all time !!!!!!
your top racing pigeon and fighting bulldog men bred as many as 4-5-6 times the brother sister mating, and then use these as brood stock to cross with another strain for their performance stock. their idea behind this is to magnifly the good traits, and also they have a fear of "if it ain't broke dont fix it"........and "one bad apple could spoil the whole barrel".
i will enclose a few pictures....... the 1st being of a cock that's from a mother son x 2 mating,........then him bred back to his cousin, then his daughter to get the pullet i'm holding and the stag on the barrell. the last photo is of the same stag as a 2 yr. old.
respect,
rick

questions for floyd.........is there a difference between the conditioning and pre conditioning periods?

like night and day, my friend....if he's never seen it before, he better be seeing it now. being confined to the keep stalls, the noise, the people, the constant in and out over a period of day's wear a rooster very thin if he's not used to it. of course he has to be introduced to the work he'll be getting in the main keep as well.
some roosters can't even take coming into the cock house and fly pens without falling apart...let me tell you a story. it was 1986 and i had raised what i thought were a bunch of good cocks about 100 of them, these were the 1st cocks i'd raised really on my own, no help from no body.
i had a long tall dark red lemon neck, pea comb hatch cock, kinda like the pictures that oscar ust to have in his ad on page 1 of the game cock , that was just my favorite. i'd been hanging out at this pit called thackerville in oklahoma. they fought sunday derbies, the day after texoma. so alot of times the big boy's would bring their left over's or a special show of roosters there. i'm talk'n bout the big boy's, all the way from the duke, to jay goode, dan gray, the thompson boy's that owned copper state, all the boy's from texoma would come there. there was a very respected mexican man that fought there religiuosly, by the name of cecil orteaga, and they were holding a tribute in honor of him. well back to the hatch cock, i get a little side tracked at times. i'd put this cock in the fly pens several months earlier with the hope of fighting him. he was fine that day, well i go out the next morning and this cock is sitting on the roost with his hack feathers so high it was embarrassing. i thought well i'll pull that dunghill bastard's head off. i went in and got him and by the time i got him out side, i just couldn't do it. i'm talking about this s.o.b. was a speciman, so i put him back on his cord.well a week or to later, i tried it again. this time, he made it a couple day's.........same thing again. i go in to get him to kill him again, by the time i get outside,i'd changed my mind again. i mean this bastard looked just like the picture of the perfect fight'n rooster i had in my mind, and he could get it to boot. so back on the cord he goes.i was tell'n somebody about how high his hack feathers were, i said it reminded me of a parrot....henceforth...he was known as old parrot. well this happens a couple more times, but i finally get him all the way thru the keep, and now we get back to where we were earlier..........the cecil ortaega tribute at thackerville. well they start call'n numbers and call mine....guess what ? it's ol parrot....... i get the shortknife put on him and get to the scale....guess what else? there's cecil standing there with his rooster.......i'm meet'n cecil ortaega in his own tribute..uuuuaaa....here come the butterflies. anyway, we get in the pit ,bill'm up turn'm loose, and it looks like a small tornado start'n up in there, i'm talk'n these two are get'n after it. well we finally handle, cecil is cut to pieces, but not as bad as me. ol parrots right leg is cut plumb off, just as limp as a wrag, and he's got more holes in'm than a termite mound.we bring'm back to the line and ol parrot stand's on that good leg and hop's to meet cecil's rooster, then he get's a bill holt, sits down on that tail and turn's on the fan baby !!!!!!!! we handle them again.....pit'm again, this time cecil's rooster stands on his line and parrot hop's over to him, grabs holt and does a repeat of the previous pit'n. this time when they come loose cecil's stone dead!!!!!!!!! i don't think i've ever been much prouder. unless it was the time i whipped lee roy west brook in his tribute, but that's another story.
the moral is..........the prekeep teaches them alot, and you might learn something too if your lucky.......i know i did. the main thing is go slow...........go at their pace..........fight'm when THEIR ready, and remember, "their just chickens".
respect,
rick
p.s. i won the derby 5 straight......yeehaw
